LLANDYRNOG United crashed out of the JD Welsh Cup in dramatic fashion thanks to a penalty shootout defeat to Rhydymwyn.

Ryan Harden’s men put a huge fight before eventually bowing out at the second qualifying round stage, with the game finishing 2-2 after extra time and 3-2 following the spot kicks.

United will now turn their attentions to Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One action, which sees them entertain title hopefuls Llanrug United this Saturday (2.30pm).

A strong opening to the tie from the away side saw them go ahead after just eight minutes when Jamie Wynne produced a scintillating free-kick into the top corner from just outside the area.

The home side picked themselves up from the setback and began to impose themselves on proceedings, levelling the contest soon after thanks to a sensational individual effort from Sam Lewis, who beat a number of attempted tackles before slotting home.

After the break saw the hosts dominate the majority of possession but failed to take advantage of the opportunities that came their way, and they were punished for their lack of conviction in front of goal when Wynne notched his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot midway through the half.

Harden’s men once again showed great character and managed to equalise thanks to a spot kick of their own from Les Brophy, who held his nerve to send the game into an additional 30 minutes.

With neither side able to find a break through during extra-time, visiting custodian Sam Thomas proved to be the hero by saving three penalties to condemn United to a cup exit.
