HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR 4

CORWEN 2

THERE was to be no shock during Corwen's Welsh Cup trip to Holyhead Hotspur.

Danny Jellicoe's Wrexham Area League Premier Division side were dangerous opponents for Huws Gray Alliance Holyhead Hotspur, but two goals in each half made sure it was the higher ranked team that progressed.

Corwen opted to play against a strong wind in the first half, but they found themselves behind in the third minute.

A corner found Caio Hywel at the far post and his header went over two defenders to make it 1-0.

The visitors looked to respond and Sam Henry was denied by home keeper Carl Jones, while Corwen had a further opportunity when they were awarded a free kick in the 34th minute.

Joe Williams curled the set piece beyond the wall, but Jones was able to save.

Five minutes later and Sam Henry's header went just wide, however the hosts doubled their advantage shortly before half-time.

From a cross into the box, Mel McGinness got the better of his marker to find the back of the net.

Corwen found a way back into the tie just three minutes after the break.

Good work from Scott Evans and Joe Williams released Sam Henry to go around the keeper and slot home.

Kyle Jones and Scott Evans were both denied as Corwen went in search for an equaliser and Jones' latter fingertip save proved to be a pivotal moment.

Four minutes later, Marc Evans played in Aron Hughes-Evans, who made it 3-1 to the hosts.

It was game on again with eight minutes remaining when Iorwerth Jones was fouled and Corwen were awarded a penalty.

Sam Henry made no mistake from the spot to set up a grandstand finish.

It was to be Holyhead's day, though, and a brilliant finish from Marc Evans sealed his side's victory in the 86th minute.
