STEVE Aylott was the player of the match for Denbigh A when they defeated Flint Phoenix B 8-0 in Division One of the North East Wales Badminton League.

He partnered Beverly Dolman at second mixed and the duo had little trouble in dispatching Chris Jones and Nicola White 21-13, 21-9.

Playing a man short, Llangollen were always going to struggle in their match at a strong and experienced Llanferres A.

And so it was, with Llanferres A coming out 8-0 winners.

Llangollen’s first pairing of Nik Evans and Jane Jones came closest to claiming a win when they pushed Jane and Tom Givelin all the way, before going down over three hard-fought games 21-16, 19-21, 17-21.

The basement battle in Division Two went a close 5-3 in favour of hosts Connah’s Quay against a determined Holywell A.

In Division Three, Llanferres C’s push for promotion was enhanced with their 5-3 away win at Flint Phoenix C.

With five events going to the best of three games, this was indeed a tight match and just 11 points separated the teams at its conclusion. First mixed proved to be the event of the evening, when Howard Robinson and Hazel Hyslop gave a vintage display of mixed doubles tactics to edge out Dave Stretch and Catrin James over three pulsating games.

They won 21-14, 22-24, 21-17.

The NEWBA senior county team travelled to play their two-day fixture in the English Senior County Championship at Stratford and they came away with three outstanding wins.

Represented by Andy Oates, Tom Sudder, Scott Oates, Jess Ding, Carys Jones, Ellen Liddle, Jamie Noble and Fiona Reid, the team did the association proud when they defeated Northamptonshire 2nds 10-1, Staffordshire 3rds 9-2 and Worcester 3rds 7-4.
