PRESTATYN Running Club's supervets have won numerous awards at national level over the years, but their latest success surprised even themselves.

On Sunday, they travelled to Horwich for the British Masters' 5k championships hoping to pick up another team prize.

However, when Dave Hughes pulled out with a back pain it left Roger Harrison-Jones and John Hickman one short of the required trio.

The only other club member competing - in the M45 category - was captain James Rogers, so the two supervets agreed to make up an M45 team with him.

To their amazement, they came away with team silver and to add icing on the cake, Roger won individual gold in the M80 class. Placings: 84, James Rogers 20.21; 122, John Hickman 26.50; 127, Roger Harrison-Jones 29.09.

The medal came at the end of a busy week for James, who had no fewer than four races in the space of seven days, including the 12-mile Ras Pedol Foel Fras mountain race the previous day.

His time there was 3-18.54.

Also on Sunday, Sian Beck finished as the third L40 in the Stone St Michael 10k race in Staffordshire, clocking 43.29.

She was competing as a member of the North Wales team in the inter-county match.

On Friday evening, the trio of Rob Alexander, Jo Hoppes and Wyn Roberts, under the pseudonym the Three Bad Llamas, won the mixed team award in the Hawarden trail relay.

By completing 15 laps measuring 2k in two hours, they also came second overall.

Ten members turned out in the penultimate race in the Tuesday night series of fell-races at Aber.
