CAERWYS 2

NEFYN UNITED 3

CAERWYS departed this season's Welsh Trophy at the first hurdle following a lacklustre performance against Nefyn United.

It was the Gwynedd League visitors who capitalised on a shaky start from Caerwys, squandering a great chance before goalkeeper Seb Czubaj was called into action with several fine saves.

Caerwys began to grow into the game and they took the lead in the 34th minute when an Alex Harrison-Smith corner was headed home by Jon Edmonds.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the half, Caerwys led 1-0 at the interval.

The hosts started the second half brightly and they threatened to extend the league as an Edmonds effort was headed off the line at the expense of a corner.

From the resulting set piece, a Harrison-Smith delivery was met by Theo Woolford with a bullet header to double the Caerwys lead in the 55th minute.

Minutes later and Nefyn capitalised on a missed clearance which saw their striker fouled in the box following a last ditch challenge from Matty Palin.

Czubaj was close to getting a hand to it, but the penalty found the bottom corner of the net.

Nefyn were reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards following a dangerous lunge.

However, the sending off galvanised Nefyn and they were soon level when a hopeful punt over the top wasn’t cleared and the visiting winger finished with a fine strike from 20 yards out.

Caerwys went close to restoring their lead as Ryan Edge hit the post and a Tom Cumming header was cleared off the line.

With 10 minutes remaining, a short corner from the visitors saw a wicked deflection wrong-foot Czubaj and find the corner of the net.
