GUILSFIELD 3

CORWEN 3

FRIDAY the 13th turned out to be a pretty lucky day for Corwen!

A third game in a week and fourth away game in a row saw them make the trip to Powys to take on Guilsfield.

The home side had a couple of chances in the opening minutes, but they were unable to find an early goal.

In the fifth minute, Corwen’s Tom Williams ran with the ball before pinging a shot from the edge of the box and this went narrowly wide of the post.

At the other end, Adam Davies played a low ball into the path of Steven Blenkinsop, but he was prevented from getting a shot away when Nathan Davies slid in.

The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute and it was Guilsfield who were celebrating.

Adam Jenkins sent a powerful shot at goal and keeper Dylan Jones was unable to prevent the strike from going in.

The Corwen response was almost immediate and they were level a minute later.

Scott Evans played a corner into the box and Ryan Billington was there to knock the ball into the back of the net off his knee.

Corwen went so close to claiming the lead soon after.

Scott Evans played the ball on to Dale Davies and his header went over goalkeeper Michael Jones, but it struck the bar before bouncing on the ground and away from goal.

With 33 minutes on the clock, the visitors did get their noses in front.

Scott Evans played a 30-yard free kick into the Guilsfield box and it was met by Dale Davies' header, which flew into the net.

Things got even better for Corwen when they extended their lead a minute into the second period.

Tom Williams played a great cross into the box and Dale Davies was waiting to head the ball into the back of the net.

It was far from being game over and the hosts pulled a goal back four minutes later.

From a long free kick, Adam Jenkins stole the ball from Matthew Williams and fired into the bottom corner of the net.

Guilsfield were now on the front foot and Jake Cook set up Jenkins, who poked the ball just wide of the target.

Corwen hit their hosts on the counter attack, with Joe Williams' shot being saved by Michael Jones.

Dale Davies chased the loose ball, but the keeper gathered it at the second time of asking.

The scoreline was level in the 63rd minute.

Chris Cathrall's shot was saved by Dylan Jones, but he could only look on helplessly as the ball ran along the front of the goal and Adam Jenkins tapped in for his hat-trick.

It looked like Guilsfield were going to reclaim the lead with 20 minutes left to play when they were awarded a disputed penalty.

However, Adam Davies' spot kick was brilliantly saved by Jones.

PENRHYNCOCH 1

CORWEN 0

AWAY days are becoming something of a habit for the lads from War Memorial Park.

Corwen made the long trip to Penrhyncoch on a Tuesday evening in their third of four away games in a row.

After winning the toss, Corwen opted to play up the slope in the first half.

The home side got out of the traps quickly and in the first minute, a cross-shot from a tight angle was pushed over the bar by keeper Dylan Jones.

At the top of the slope, the visitors were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal.

Scott Evans' effort went up and over the wall, however keeper Leigh Jenkins was able to pounce on the loose ball.

Corwen continued to create chances and Joe Williams' shot at goal forced a good save out of Jenkins.

At the other end, Penrhyncoch’s Liam Lewis had an effort that went narrowly wide of the far post.

On the brink of half-time, Ryan Billington collected the ball and played it on to Dale Davies, whose shot forced a save out of Leigh Jenkins.

After the break, Corwen’s Eilir Edwards looked as if he was going to get a candidate for goal of the season.

He unleashed a 35-yard shot at goal, which was tipped over the bar by Leigh Jenkins.

From the resulting corner a Corwen player narrowly headed the ball wide of the post.

The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute.

Jack Rimmer's free kick glanced off the head of Jonathan Foligno and it fell at the feet of Steffan Davies, whose scruffy shot went into the back of the net from close range.
