RUTHIN TOWN 0

COLWYN BAY 1

ANDY Coughlin saved an injury time penalty to secure three points for Colwyn Bay in a 1-0 win at Ruthin Town.

Mitch Bryant got the only goal of the game with a back heel from Sion Edwards' driven free kick, although home keeper Ryan Goldston made a number of fine saves to keep his side in the game.

Ruthin made a strong start and they had a couple of good early chances, with a header going just wide from a free kick and top scorer Llyr Morris shot into the side-netting.

However, Colwyn Bay gradually worked themselves into the game and Mitch Bryant got the ball into the net after his effort had been blocked by the keeper - but the flag was already up for offside.

Ryan Goldston then parried away a Tom McCready free kick and he did even better to beat away a well-struck volley from the Colwyn Bay skipper, while he also saved well from Mitch Bryant.

Eventually, Bay took the lead right on the stroke of half-time.

Alex Downes put in a strong run down the right before being brought down on the left edge of Ruthin's penalty area.

When Sion Edwards drove the free kick into the goalmouth, Mitch Bryant got the final touch to back heel it past the keeper.

The Seagulls then had chances to kill the game off in the second half, with Mitch Bryant miscuing an angled shot when in on goal and he hit another effort narrowly wide from Tom McCready's good pass.

Sion Edwards volleyed a bouncing ball over the bar after McCready's run had opened up the home defence again.

McCready had a shot superbly turned round the post by the diving keeper and had a strong shout for a penalty waved away when another shot was blocked by a defender's arm.

Mike Williams also headed narrowly wide from a McCready corner.

While it remained at 1-0, Ruthin were always in with a shout and although they had Garmon Hafal red carded a minute from the end, they had the perfect chance to rescue a point when awarded an injury time penalty for a foul by Mike Williams.

Llyr Morris took the spot kick, but Andy Coughlin flung his body in the way to deflect the ball over the bar and secure victory for his side.
