CORWEN 2

GRESFORD ATHLETIC 6

HOME comforts have finally be welcomed by Corwen.

After four away games on the bounce, Corwen played their first home game for a month as they hosted Gresford Athletic on a windy Saturday afternoon.

The deadlock was broken after 16 minutes when Aaron Edwards found the back of the net with a close range header to give Gresford the lead.

Edwards had another attempt at goal, which he could only blast wide of the post.

Former Corwen player Jordan MacCarter beat the offside to get into the box and his shot across the face of the goal went wide of the far post.

At the other end, Dominic Doherty blasted a shot over the bar, while Athletic went close to stretching their advantage when Edwards' header hit the inside of the post before being cleared by a sliding Elystan Hughes.

It was two-nil with 10 minutes of the first half left.

Kieran Evans got one-on-one with Dylan Jones and he shot the ball past the Corwen number one.

Things got worse for Corwen on the brink of half-time.

The hosts failed to clear their lines, allowing Paul Williams to back heel the ball to Jake Eyre and he slotted into the corner of the net to make the score 3-0.

Corwen's hopes of a fightback were boosted with a peach of a goal in the 55th minute.

Scott Evans hit a pile driver of a first time volley to bury the ball into the back of the net from all of 30 yards.

Just when Corwen thought they were back in the game, they hit the self-destruct button.

A minute-and-a-half after pulling a goal back, they gave away a penalty.

From the spot kick, Jake Eyre sent Dylan Jones the wrong way.

At the other end, Scott Evans tried his luck again with a long range shot, but keeper Ben Jones was able to make the save, before recovering to deny Joe Williams from the rebound.

From the ensuing corner, Dale Davies was able to find the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Ben Jones.

Jake Eyre was given the opportunity to complete his hat-trick when Gresford were awarded a second penalty.

He managed to convert the spot kick, despite the fact Dylan Jones guessed the right way.

Eyre then made it four goals for himself with a quarter-of-an-hour left to play.

Given too much space in the penalty area, Eyre slotted the ball into the back of the net.

With three minutes left to play, Corwen did grab a consolation goal.

Scott Evans' shot from outside the area went over Ben Jones and clipped the underside of the bar on its way into the back of the net.
