LLANNEFYDD 2

LLANRWST UNITED 0

TWO goals in the closing stages helped Llannefydd to claim a memorable JD Welsh Cup success.

Extra time looked to be on the cards as the second qualifying round tie between the villagers and higher league Llanrwst United remained goalless after 89 minutes.

However, Llannefydd completed the tie on the front foot and they secured a memorable 2-0 triumph sealed their spot in the first round proper.

There was little between the teams during a tight first half, with Sam Jones having an effort for the visitors, while defender David Evans was a real threat from corners for Llannefydd.

Llanrwst looked to take the lead after the interval with a strike from distance, which was saved by home number one Ifan Roberts.

Things got messy as Llanrwst had a player sent off, while they also picked up five yellow cards.

With Ynyr Jones and Tomos Jones prominent down the wings, Llannefydd were creating chances, but it remained 0-0 heading into the closing few minutes.

Then, in the 89th minute, a Llanrwst player pulled Ynyr Clwyd's shirt, leading to a penalty being awarded.

Captain Elgan Roberts stepped forward and he held his nerve to convert the spot kick, much to the delight of the Llannefydd supporters.

There was five minutes of injury time and the home side continued to stand firm.

In the 95th minute, Tomos Jones sealed the deal with Llannefydd's second goal of the contest.

Looking ahead to the first round proper and Llannefydd will pay a visit to Wrexham Area League Premier Division Chirk AAA.
