CHIRK AAA 0

LLANNEFYDD 3

THE villagers have brilliantly continued their march in the JD Welsh Cup.

In the biggest match in their history, Llannefydd were in superb form to see off hosts Chirk AAA 3-0 in the first round.

It turned out to be a memorable debut for Stuart Griffiths, who took his spot between the posts following his transfer from Denbigh Town.

There was little between the teams in the opening period, but Llannefydd did take the lead close to half time.

Good work from Tomos Jones saw him cross to Ynyr Clwyd, who struck the ball into the back of the net.

Chirk were pressing for an equaliser at the start of the second half, while Llan looked dangerous on the break.

The home side's hopes were hit when their captain was sent off for a foul on Ynyr Clwyd after an hour.

After this, there was only one team in it and Llannefydd extended their lead in the 75th minute.

A great run from Tomos Jones saw him beat three players before being fouled in the box.

Captain Elgan Roberts stepped forward to score from the spot.

As the tie drew to a close, Llannefydd won another penalty, this time for a foul on Ynyr Clwyd.

Once again, Elgan Roberts made no mistake from the spot, scoring his fifth Welsh Cup goal of the season.

In the next round, Llannefydd will host JD Cymru North side Guilsfield.

Meanwhile, Ruthin Town have been handed a tasty looking second round tie at newly formed Bangor 1876.
