A RECORD eight members of Prestatyn Running Club have been named in the North Wales squad for the Welsh inter-regional cross-country championships in Brecon on November 16.

They are Lois Lee, Jenna Bagnall, Helen Ashworth, Joy Hickman, Helen Baxandall, Josh Cerefice, Rob Alexander and George Nixon.

On the same day, Steve Skates and Gareth Hughes will run for Wales in the British and Irish Masters’ international in Liverpool, for which Gordon Jones and George Nixon are reserves.

The weather made conditions for the 37th Snowdonia Marathon tougher than usual, but the club’s two competitors turned in highly creditable times.

In a 3,000-strong field, Gethin Evans, in his first attempt at the event, was the 325th male in 3-49.04 and Gareth Roberts finished 485th.

It was his seventh “Snowdonia” and he had good reason to be satisfied even though he missed his four-hour target by just 54 seconds.

Steve Brown also took to the hills on Sunday, when the weather was much more favourable even though conditions under foot were tricky.

He finished 79th in the Clwydian Hills race, a nine-mile event involving 3,000 feet of climbing, with a time of 1-25.46.

Despite the rain, all the club’s representatives in Saturday’s Porth Eirias 10k in Colwyn Bay also produced good times, albeit on a short course.

They were: Steve Weedman 43.19; Hannah Garnett 46.54; Martin Gill 47.26; Jan Garnett 55.56; Debbie Weedman; Suzanne Evans 71.01; Julie Evans 71.16.

Emma Birchall, Prestatyn’s only runner in the Conwy Parkrun, came 91st in 31.07.

This Sunday, a large contingent from the club is expected to turn out in the annual Abergele 5, which again incorporates the North Wales championship.
