THE Abergele 5-miler, which once again incorporated the North Wales championship, provided the usual rich pickings for Prestatyn Running Club.

Not only did the club have four regional champions, but the senior men’s team also won.

Leon Bagnall was a member of the North Wales team which beat Cheshire in an inter-county challenge, while Hannah Garnett picked up an award for the first local finisher.

For the first time, the main event was preceded by a 5k race in which the club had four age-group wins and two seconds.

Also pleasing was the return to competition of former club chairman and captain Paul Brandrick, still easing his way back after major surgery.

Five intrepid members did not let the dark nights interfere with their racing when, with headlamps in place, they took part in the 4.5-mile fell-race up Penycloddiau in the Clwydian Hills.

Helen Ashworth led the group home and was third lady overall.

Sixteen-year-old Eve Scott is the latest club member to be called up to the North Wales team for the Welsh inter-regional cross-country championships in Brecon on November 16, taking the total to nine.

This Sunday, another strong turnout is expected by the club’s men and women for the second Borders Road-Running League fixture being hosted by Deeside AAC.
