NEFYN UNITED 1

DENBIGH TOWN 5

FIVE-STAR Denbigh Town have maintained their march in a national competition.

Dewi Llion's charges moved into the hat for the fifth round of the FAW Trophy on the back of a comprehensive win at Gwynedd League Nefyn United.

A hat-trick from Jake Walker and two from Mark Roberts did the trick to see Denbigh comfortably through after the hosts had taken an early lead.

Despite being two leagues below Denbigh, Nefyn had done well in cup football this season.

They were also unbeaten at their home ground Cae’r Delyn in the league and Denbigh knew this had the potential of being a cup upset.

It was Nefyn who started the brighter of the two teams and when Town keeper Antoni Sarnowski handled a back pass, the hosts won a free kick in the penalty area.

Nefyn’s shot from the kick was blocked by Denbigh’s wall and the rebound fell to Gethin Trenholme, who shot over the bar.

Just as Denbigh settled into the game and appeared to be in control, Nefyn claimed the lead on 21 minutes.

Carl Jones crossed into the area and Steve Jones' powerful header made it 1-0.

This stirred Denbigh into action and they were level six minutes later.

Good work from Paul Fleming, Charlie Williams and Dan Lloyd set up Jake Walker to head into the net.

Denbigh stepped up a gear after this and they claimed the lead nine minutes shy of the interval.

Moses Barnett was fouled in the dangerzone and the referee pointed to the spot.

Walker stepped up to fire the penalty into the back of the net.

Nefyn looked to bounce back after this and Dylan Jones was unlucky to see his header go just over Sarnowski’s bar from a free kick.

As half-time approached, Denbigh had their best spell and they played some attractive football, with Jake Walker and Mark Roberts both going close to extending their lead.

Nefyn had the best of the early play in the second half and Sarnowski was forced to make a fine save to deny Carl Jones.

A minute later and the big keeper was forced to stretch and tip the ball over the bar from another Nefyn attack.

This finally spurred Denbigh into action and they went on to enjoy periods of good possession.

The visitors extended their advantage after an hour.

Dogged determination from Dan Lloyd set up Mark Roberts to knock the ball home from six yards out.

Nefyn's hopes of a fightback were effectively ended when they were reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute.

Sion Jones was on the receiving end of a vicious tackle and was fortunate not be seriously injured.

The Nefyn culprit received his second yellow card and he was off for an early bath.

As the game approached its final 15 minutes, Denbigh extended their lead further.

Chris Bennett sent in a deep cross to Mark Roberts at the back post and his header flew into the net.

With eight minutes remaining, Denbigh were awarded a second penalty of the afternoon.

Mark Roberts’ low shot hit the hand of a defender for the spot kick to be awarded and Jake Walker hit a low penalty wide of the keeper to claim his hat-trick.
