CAERWYS 5

MOLD TOWN UNITED 3

THERE'S been a five-star beginning to 2020 for Caerwys.

They are slowly climbing the Clwyd League (East) table following a hard fought 5-3 win over rivals Mold Town Utd.

Joining interim boss Jordan Hadaway in the dugout for Caerwys was Andy Mackie, who will offer valuable assistance from the sidelines.

The home team started the match brightly and they managed to string some decent passes around.

Deiniol Bower’s clever play down the left flank saw his shot from 20 yards out being tipped over at the far post by Ben Tudor.

The deadlock was broken after three minutes.

Neat play by Tom Cumming down the right set up recent signing Ryan Jones to score from 12 yards.

Debutant left back Lewis Harrison, who had been linking up well, suffered a groin strain early on and he was replaced by the reliable Ruari Wood.

Wood’s long throws into the opposition box proved a constant danger throughout the game.

At the other end, Arron North went close for Mold, before his header on 33 minutes went through the legs of Rhys Williams for a soft equaliser.

The Mold team then took the lead when Steve Wilson’s shot from a tight angle crept in at the far post.

Caerwys rallied and after Jack Mackie headed over the bar, Ryan Jones equalised with a great header from a Jon Edmonds cross right on the stroke of half time.

The home team started well after the break and Jones claimed his hat-trick with another decent effort on 50 minutes after a great cross from Jack Cox.

A precision pass from Bower set up a wonder strike from Elgan Hughes on the hour, before Brendan Jones pulled a goal back for Mold.

Jon Edmonds crowned a great game with the fifth Caerwys goal two minutes shy of the final whistle.

This was a much better display from a Caerwys team which looked more settled and composed.

There's a crucial game this weekend as Caerwys travel to leaders Brymbo Victoria.

Reflecting on Saturday's win, Caerwys manager Hadaway said: “It’s great to see us enjoying our football again.

"We are playing good football and getting the results we deserve.

"The lads are battling and working hard for each other on the pitch, which is what we missed in parts of this season.

"Next week is a tough trip to top of the league Brymbo but myself, Andy and the lads are looking forward to the game!”
