CORWEN 1

BUCKLEY TOWN 1

A LATE goal did the trick to make sure Corwen made their point over the weekend.

The War Memorial Park outfit hosted Buckley Town in their latest spot of JD Cymru North action and Sam Henry's strike in the concluding five minutes saw the match end up as a draw.

The Corwen starting line-up included a number of new faces, as well as one old one.

Sam Tyrer, Gwydion Ifan and Keighan Jones all made their debuts, while last season's top scorer Sam Henry was making his first appearance since completing his transfer back from Blacon Youth.

Early in the contest, Dale Davies crossed into the box for Sam Henry to get his toe to the ball, which forced a good save from keeper Josef Makaruk.

The rebound fell into the path of Gwydion Ifan, who could only send his shot wide of the target.

At the other end, Samuel Spridgeon's curling effort was saved by Keighan Jones.

The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute.

Keighan Jones came off his line to meet a back pass, but he made a mess of the clearance under pressure from Samuel Spridgeon, who was able to get around the keeper with the ball and fire into an unguarded net.

The home side went in search of an equaliser as Gwydion Ifan looped the ball forward to Sam Henry and his attempt forced a great save out of Makaruk.

Five minutes before the break and a corner was played into the Buckley box, where it was met by the head of Ryan Billington and his effort went narrowly wide of the target.

Turning to the second half and Aron Williams' powerful shot went over the bar, while Gwydion Ifan's strike went wide of the far post.

The home side had a penalty shout when Dale Davies was brought down in the area, but although the Corwen players were adamant he was fouled, the referee waved away the claims.

As the game entered the final five minutes, a great ball was played forward to Sam Henry.

After running on to it, Henry found the top corner of the net with a brilliant finish from the 18-yard line.

The home side went in search of a winner with a cross being played into the Buckley box, but Josef Makaruk was able to win the aerial battle with Ioz Jones.

The visitors went so close to claiming the three points in the second minute of stoppage time.

Jake Roberts' free kick from the edge of the box went beyond the reach of Keighan Jones, but it smashed against the far post.

A Town player headed the rebound towards the goal, but Keighan Jones recovered to gather the ball.

Four minutes later and Buckley threatened again, with Lewis Hone's header forcing Keighan Jones into a brilliant fingertip save.
