GREENFIELD 1

LLANDYRNOG UNITED 1

NEVER-SAY-DIE Llandyrnog United made sure they made their point over the weekend.

Although they trailed hosts Greenfield with less than five minutes remaining, Llandyrnog battled back to seal a share of the spoils.

Llandyrnog manager Jimmy McNally said: "I felt the lads put in a solid shift all over the park.

"We went there missing a couple of key lads through injury, but the remaining lads didn't let that get to them.

"They rolled their sleeves up and worked tirelessly.

Daniel Lewis returned to the starting XI and put in what McNally described as his best performance of the season so far.

Meanwhile, Tom Kelly and David Clayton complimented Derry Morris in the heart of the defence, with all three performing resolutely throughout the 90 minutes.

In the first half, Llandyrnog were forced to do a fair bit of defending as Greenfield had the wind behind them.

The hosts forced a number of corners, but Llandyrnog's backline was able to stand firm.

Up front, Brandon Keating had the tough task of trying to hold the ball up to allow his side to get out from their defensive duties and he performed admirably in trying conditions.

"The message was clear at half-time," added McNally.

"I asked the lads to use the conditions to our advantage, as Greenfield tried to do, and to remain tight at the back."

If United's players thought the hard work had been done playing into the win, they were in for a shock.

Just after the restart, Greenfield claimed the lead.

A slack pass from the back resulted in Dean Hyland putting the hosts ahead.

That goal seemed to stun Llandyrnog and McNally introduced Eddie Evans in place of a tiring Brandon Keating.

With a quarter-of-an-hour left to play, Greenfield were reduced to 10 men.

Scorer Dean Hyland was sent off for kicking out at Chris Evans.

This incident resulted in a change for United, with youngster Tom Hughes being introduced to make it a three-man attack.

Llandyrnog would eventually gain their reward with just three minutes remaining.

Daniel Lewis' pinpoint corner found Tom Kelly, whose header looked to have crossed the line, but Ross Gilbert was on hand to make sure.

Buoyed by this strike, Llandyrnog almost took the lead moments later.

Nathan Rose's effort from all of 25 yards forced the home keeper into a brilliant save.

Eddie Evans was following up for the rebound, but he couldn't quite get the connection before the keeper recovered to smother the ball.

The game ended with more drama as the resilient hosts pressed for a winner themselves.

However, they were thwarted by the outstanding Barney Murray as Llandyrnog safeguarded a well earned point.

"As I've said in the last few weeks, we need to believe in ourselves," added McNally.

"By no means can we get carried away off the back of one draw, but that was a snippet of what I know my lads can achieve."

Turning to Division Two and Llannefydd made their point away from home.

The villagers played out a 0-0 draw during their trip to fellow high-flyers Pwllheli.
