NANT CONWY 50

DINBYCH 5

A MAKESHIFT Dinbych side worked hard throughout, but they fell to their second heavy defeat of the week against a disciplined Nant Conwy team. Whilst the Dinbych pack had the edge in the scrums, the hosts owed their victory to their greater physicality in the contact area and their excellent support play which led to most of their tries.

Playing with a stiff breeze in their favour, Dinbych started strongly by taking play deep into the Nant 22 mainly through the driving play of the forwards.

They took the lead in the 12th minute when prop Harry Collins went over for an unconverted try after an initial surge by fellow prop and captain Joe Davies following a driving maul from a short-range lineout.

Nant gradually exerted their authority on proceedings and they drew level midway through the half with an unconverted try by left wing Elgan Roberts.

The hosts then went ahead following an attack down the middle and going through a number of phases before outside half Rhydian Jones went over in the right hand corner for a try, which he converted himself with an excellent kick from the touchline.

Dinbych then suffered a blow on the stroke of half-time when they lost a player to the sin bin in attempting to stop a dangerous attack down the right hand touchline.

Nant capitalised on this immediately in the last move of the half when scrum half Cai Jones sniped over from a maul near the line for a try, converted by Rhydian Jones which gave the hosts a 19-5 lead at the interval.

Nant continued to make their superiority in numbers tell with two quick tries in the opening minutes of the second half by centre Gwion Jones and Elgan Roberts, the latter being converted by Rhydian Jones.

Both tries resulted from good support play.

Midway through the half and Nant Conwy went further ahead with a counter attack from their own half being finished by flanker Jack Ellis and this was again converted by Rhydian Jones.

In the closing minutes Nant added two further tries with Rhydian Jones taking advantage of a failure to deal with a speculative kick near the Dinbych line to pounce for his second try.

The final try was by number eight Carwyn Ellis after the hosts had turned over possession on halfway, with Rhydian Jones adding the extras.
