A SWIMMING club’s fine fundraising efforts, which took place earlier in the year, has raised more than £1000 for two charities.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, members of the Denbigh Dragons club were tasked with swimming the equivalent distance from Land’s End to John’o’Groats in support of Alzheimers Society and Tŷ Gobaith/Hope House.

A total of 864 miles was completed during 20 determined training sessions in the pool with both charities receiving £538.44 each as a result of the club’s efforts.

Denbigh Dragons coach Justin Jones says more than 90 members took part in the fundraiser.

He added: “Swimmers completed as many lengths as they could each session and these were tallied by me and the other coaches.

"We selected two very worthy charities and in total, we managed to raise £1076.88, which was then split equally for each of them.

"This was a venture decided upon by us, so we can continue our great work in the community and give back to those in need."

Established in 2004, Denbigh Dragons Swim Club has gone from strength to strength as a not for profit community based group.

During the last 16 years, it has developed into a sustainable and successful, competitive swimming club with is many, many members taking part at Local, County, Welsh National and British National level competitions.

Earlier this year, before coronavirus lockdown rules were implemented, the club enjoyed success at the 2020 Swim Wales North Regional Championships held at Llandudno Swim Centre.

Six swimmers won bronze, 12 took silver medals and 13 won gold, becoming North Wales champions in the process.

The club finished overall sixth out of 19 clubs present.

Coach Justin added: "Our results were fantastic and much improved compared to 2019. We did also retain our same spot in the top team overall results behind many of the larger populated clubs in the North."

During lockdown, the club has been doing a series of social media challenges to keep its followers entertained.
