BALA Town skipper Chris Venables has scooped the JD Cymru Premier Golden Boot for the 2019/20 season.

Following the Football Association of Wales (FAW)'s decision to curtail the campaign due to the coronavirus outbreak, The Lakesiders have qualified for the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds after a one-year absence.

However, there was also further cause for celebration for Colin Caton's side when it was officially announced that club captain Venables had finished as the league's top scorer.

The midfielder has been on fire throughout the campaign for Bala and finished on 22 goals in just 26 matches - four ahead of The New Saints' prolific striker Greg Draper who finished on 18.

It is the fourth time that Venables has won the 'Golden Boot', however it is the first he has won whilst with Bala, having previously scooped the prize on three occasions for Aberystwyth Town between 2013-14 and 2015-16, netting 24, 28 and 20 goals to top the list.

By now, Venables has made more than 400 appearances in Wales' top-flight, scoring nearly 200 goals -which is a great return for a midfielder.

He has also been named WPL (now JD Cymru Premier) Player of the Season in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and will surely be a contender for this year's prize too.

The 34-year-old started out at Shrewsbury Town before stints at Welshpool, Caersws, Aberystwyth Town and Llanelli. He made the move to Maes Tegid with Bala in 2016.

This season, his 17th in Wales' top flight, Venables has helped his side climb up to third in the JD Cymru Premier table, earning them a place in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds for the 2020/21 season.
