BALA TOWN captain Chris Venables has been chosen as the 2019/20 JD Cymru Player of the Season.

The 35-year-old midfielder-turned-attacker enjoyed a fine campaign as the Lakesiders finished third in the table and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, where they have so far reached the Second Qualifying Round.

Venables' terrific season saw him pick up the top-flight's Player of the Season accolade for the third time, having previously won it in 2013/14 and 2014/15 whilst with Aberystwyth Town.

To add to that success, he also picked up his fourth Golden Boot prize, given to the division's top scorer, after netting 22 goals in just 26 matches for Bala in 2019/20.

Venables had previously won that prize three times in a row whilst at Aberyswtyth between 2013-16, having scored 24, 28 and 20 goals respectively.

Having moved into a more attacking role for 2019/20, it was no surprise to see that Bala's captain's fourth season was his best goalscoring one to date.

Commenting on Twitter on being voted the JD Cymru Premier Player of the Season and picking up the Golden Boot, Venables said: "Extremely proud to win both of these awards again, huge thanks to my teammates, staff and supporters at Bala Town. I win neither without them."

Venables made his Cymru Premier debut for Caersws in the 2003/04 season, before going on to play for Welshpool Town, Aberyswyth, Llanelli Town and making a return to Aber in 2013.

He has been with Bala since 2016 and captained the Lakesiders to their famous Welsh Cup success over TNS at the end of the 2016/17 season.

As he heads into what will be his 18th season in Wales' top flight in 2020/21, Venables is fast approaching the 500 appearances mark.

He is also one of the JD Cymru Premier's top scorers of all time with 173 goals to his name - not bad at all for a player who's spent most of his career playing as a midfielder.
