DERBY delight went the way of Bala Ladies, however it was a mighty close thing against Ruthin in a weekend cup clash.

The teams couldn't be separated at the final whistle with the scoreline 1-1, but Bala went through after they managed to triumph 4-2 on penalty flicks.

Bala started the match with no keeper and Ruthin looked to take advantage, enjoying a good spell in the opening quarter-of-an-hour.

They couldn’t capitalise on this early pressure and Bala grew more into the game, beginning to have pressure of their own.

Following a free hit, the Gwynedd side attacked straight into the D, where Lois Prysor Jones was waiting by the left post to score the first goal of the game.

Ruthin found it difficult after this goal to control possession, however the defence held firm with centre halves Katie Hancock and Paula Duffy impressing.

There was an open start to the second half, with both teams enjoying spells in possession and battling to gain control of the tie.

The hard-working Eleri Jones kept Bala on their toes, with good support on the wings by Catrin Roberts and Emily Retallick.

Ruthin pulled themselves level midway through the second half.

Skilful play down the right wing allowed the ball to be played across into the D and it was neatly finished off by Mali Thomas.

The sound of the roaring crowd following the goal really boosted Ruthin’s confidence and they were determined to get the winner.

They did create some good chances, while Bala were always dangerous on the counter.

In the final minutes, Ruthin managed to get a short corner to try and get the winner.

A well worked set play nearly resulted in a goal, but a good save from Bala’s keeper took the game into penalty flicks.

It was a real rollercoaster, with Bala triumphing 4-2 to go through to the next round.
