IT didn't turn out to be the greatest of weekends for Denbigh Town.

Dewi Llion's charges lost their top of the table Ardal North West League clash to rivals Mold Alexandra, who now have a three-point lead over the chasing pack.

After an even first half when the teams went in 1-1 at half time, Mold took command of the second half, scoring three goals within 15 minutes.

Denbigh began the game with the same starting XI which beat Llanuwchllyn in the cup seven days earlier.

Town started the brighter of the two teams and they had several early chances.

Jacob Barratt forced a routine save from Eliot Quinlan after a great lay-off from Paul Fleming and when Barratt was fouled just outside Mold’s area, Jake Walker stepped up to shoot just wide of the target.

It was from a Barratt corner on 31 minutes that Denbigh took the lead.

Walker got his head to the cross from six yards to find the back of the net.

This goal spurred Mold into action and they hit the crossbar with a header from a corner.

Then, from another corner Dan Warren, sent in a cross and Steve Watkins was there to head in from close range despite protestations from Denbigh that keeper Joe Griffith had been fouled.

The second half started with Denbigh winning a free kick just outside the Mold area.

Kristian Pierce’s low shot went just to the wide of Quinlan’s goal.

On 56 minutes came a controversial moment.

With Mold’s Joe Ormerod breaking down the left wing to the Denbigh byline, the attacker sent a low cross which hit Town’s Mike Sharples from close range.

Referee Karl Berry deemed the ball had hit Sharples’ arm and pointed to the spot despite lengthy protests from Denbigh’s players.

Dan Warren stepped up to send Griffiths the wrong way and Mold had a 2-1 lead.

Tempers started to fray and Sion Jones was on the receiving end of a crude challenge on the halfway line.

From Denbigh’s resulting free kick into the Mold box, the hosts cleared the ball and from this, Town conceded a corner.

Warren's inswinging corner sailed over everyone and went straight into the net.

While Denbigh continued to battle, Mold put the game to bed with 20 minutes left to play.

It was the pick of the afternoon's goals as Dominic Doherty played in Joe Ormerod to fire home a shot and make it 4-1.

It was a disappointing result from Denbigh’s point of view, with the game being lost in a 15-minute spell during the second half, despite them having made a promising start to the game.

Denbigh will hope for better when they travel to Brickfield this Saturday.
