AN up-and-down event opened a busy programme for the Denbigh Harriers.

Mike Hobday started a weekend of running with the Conwy Mountain Fell Race on Saturday.

This was a five-mile route with 1,650 feet of climb, over and around Conwy Mountain.

Thankfully, conditions were good on the day and it was dry underfoot.

Mike finished 54th in a time of 66 minutes and 46 seconds.

A total of 21 senior members and one junior member of Denbigh Harriers travelled to Llandudno on Sunday to run the Nick Beer 30th anniversary 10km race.

The race starts on the prom, climbs up and around the Orme on the old toll road, drops swiftly down on the other side of the Orme to Church Walks to finish back on the prom.

It was a relief that the weather was better than was forecast, although there was a strong headwind impeding the customary dash down the Orme.

The Harriers returned home with a haul of medals and trophies.

The ladies' team consisting of the first three Harriers home - Melina Morris, Alaw Medi Evans and Emma Collins - were the first ladies' team out of 11 local running clubs.

Melina Morris was also the first female over 45, while Emma Collins the first female over 55.

Fred Jones was the third over-65 male at the event and Menai Baugh was the third over-60 female.

The one-and-only junior Harrier Lea Davies was fourth overall in her 1km race and the third girl.

Marking his second race in the space of 24 hours, Mike Hobday crossed the line 187th in 50.15.

There was also a top-200 spot for Fred Jones, who was 194th in 51.12.
