WINTER is finally over... and the new season can now begin!

It was indeed a busy weekend at Denbigh Golf Club with the conclusion of the 22 weeks of the winter league and the new captain's drive-in.

The latter took precedence on Saturday for the incoming captain Alan Shone, who impressively placed his drive in the middle of the fairway to start the stableford competition.

Alan was well supported by a gathering of club members to witness his drive into office and to wish him well for the forthcoming year.

The match between teams led by the captain and the vice-captain resulted in a tie.

Meanwhile, in the stableford, Eric G Howells comfortably finished at the top of the pile with 44 points.

This gave him a five-point margin and, in addition, he returned an excellent gross round of 76 to beat his age by two shots.

Don Walmsley was the runner-up with 39 points, a point ahead of third-placed Adam Houston.

The finals day of the winter league was held on Sunday with a shotgun start of teams of four occupying all tees.

This was the final opportunity for the leaders to claim the Stan Roberts Trophy.

It proved a favourable day for play, but the leader faltered to enable Fred Jones to claim the title by one point, with Mike Hughes in second place and Paul Smith third.

The team winners again included Fred Jones, alongside Paul Jones and Frazer Jones.

All those who played were entertained to a meal and a pint, with a full clubhouse of members for the presentation by the club professional.

A vote of thanks was given to men's handicap chairman Don Walmsley and shop assistant Nigel Roxburgh for their work during the season.

Although the winter league was played over a reduced course, it is well worth recording the three players who reduced their Winter handicap to such low figures.

They were Hugh Parry (+6), Darren Foulkes (+2) and Nigel Roxburgh (+2).

An astonishing haul of 50 points saw Maud Smith take the opposition to the cleaners in the ladies' 18-hole stableford.

She was 10 points clear of runner-up Helen Heywood, who topped Division Two.

Result: Winner, Maud Smith 50pts. Division 1: 1, Chris Morris 38; 2, Judy Owen 38. Division 2: 1, Helen Heywood 40; 2, Eleanor Wilde 38.
