IT'S been Wales v England on the fairways and greens.

A new match fixture arranged by Denbigh Golf Club against their counterparts from the Wirral club on Sunday witnessed a close encounter.

It was Denbigh who were able to edge ahead in the away leg with a slight margin of four points.

However, on Saturday, Ruthin-Pwllglas Golf Club pipped visitors Denbigh 5–4 in the first leg of this year's Clwyd Vale Shield.

The return fixtures are to be played later in the season.

The mighty Morris lads came to the fore in last Thursday's team stableford at Denbigh.

Derry, Kyle and Nigel Morris were joined by Nigel Jones to win the event with 118 points, four points clear of runners-up Ken Jones, Mike Robinson, Gwilym Pierce and Peter Jones.

A further point back in third position were Harry Williams, Daniel O’Sullivan, Deiniol Jones and Craig Stubbs.

Saturday was marked by the professional's stableford, with 13-handicapper Kimi Evans coming out on top with 39 points.

This was a point clear of bronze division winner Dilwyn Roberts, with Gethin Edwards (37 points) second in that section.

Chris Bamber (36 points) triumphed in the silver division, a point ahead of Nigel Roxburgh.

There was also a close competition as the ladies' section turned out for the third medal competition of the year, which was also the William Hughes qualifier.

Victorious on the day was Steph Brooks (86-16=70), but only on countback from Division One winner Dilys Jones (96-26=70).

Sue Baggaley (97-25=72) was second in Division one, while Nest Houghton (102-29=73) topped Division Two ahead of Jean B-Jones (104-31=73).
