ULTRA competitive athletes from Denbigh Harriers have taken part in an epic challenge.

It started with smiles and ended with the threat of tears and blisters as a trio of Harriers took on perhaps one of the craziest challenges the ultra world.

Tony Wood, Glen Price and Mel Morris travelled to the Llyn Peninsula to represent Wales in the first ever Lionsgate Backyard Ultra Cymru.

This was race three in the Four Nations Backyard Ultra Tournament, and part of the World Satellite Championships.

This is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run the distance of 6,706 metres (4.167 miles) in less than one hour.

Any time left over is for rest and food before a horn is sounded for the next loop and the next hour.

If athletes fail to make the starting area before the horn is sounded they are disqualified, and the last remaining runner to complete a lap of the course is named the winner.

The race itself was in one of the most remote settings, on the headland of the Rhiw Coastline at the lands end of the Llyn Peninsula, with around a 600 foot vertical climb per loop and rugged terrain.

There were 13 in the Welsh team, with 12 to count.

By lap nine, half had been lost.

Glen got through lap 10 to earn his DNF cap on lap 11 after 41.7 miles and 6,000 feet (1,828m) of elevation.

Mel carried on achieving 12 laps, 50.4 miles and 7,200 feet (2,194m) of climbing.

Meanwhile, Tony carried on for a further two laps to take third in the Welsh team.

He completed 14 laps - or 58.38 miles - with and 8,400ft (2,560m) of elevation.

Team Wales’ final two runners carried on to gain a further seven laps, with the team ending up fourh in the table.
