THE North Wales cricket side has been able to celebrate its first triumph of the season.

Wales National County (North) opened their double-header at Staffordshire Development in brilliant fashion on Wednesday with a four-wicket T20 win.

Batting first, Staffordshire set 130 for five.

Gethin Roberts was the pick of the attack with his 3-23 return.

There was also a wicket apiece for Denbigh's Harrison Jones and St Asaph's Danny Ryan.

The North Wales reply was in some trouble at 58-5 and 80-6.

However, an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 51 between Mathew Ryan (37 not out) and Joe Howell (19 not out) saw the visitors through to a four-wicket win with one ball to spare.

Also playing their part were Sam Rimmington (20) and Dan Williams (18).

Staffordshire then won the second T20 match with three deliveries to spare.

Matthew Humphreys (43), Daniel Williams (18) and Will Ryan (14) were the main scorers as North Wales made 122 for six.

Staffordshire looked to be on course for a comfortable win when they reached 102-1 in reply.

A trio of quick wickets dragged the visitors back into the encounter, however Staffordshire reached 125 for four.

The other wicket to fall went to Owen Davies.
