A VOLUNTEER service with a mission to improve Denbighshire towns through voluntary action has launched a grant scheme for community projects that help young people.

The Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council (DVSC), the Ruthin-based partner of Third Sector Support Wales, is running the Welsh Government funded pilot scheme which aims to support a range of voluntary and community groups that benefit young people’s long-term prosperity and well-being.

A minimum of 10 grants of up to £400 will be available.

The DVSC has appointed a youth panel to select projects that fit in with the scheme’s five priority areas - early years development, mental health support, housing skills, employability and social care - identified by the Welsh Government as having the potential to make the biggest impact on the lives of young people.

The DVSC hopes the youth panel, chaired by 21-year-old Damon Jones, DVSC membership and business support administrator, will make young people “decision makers” in their own communities.

Helen Wilkinson, DVSC’s chief executive, said: “It is timely that we focus on investing resources in young people and put young people in the lead as decision makers. This is not just about the way we engage young people in volunteering opportunities, it is about meeting the needs of the new generation and genuinely empowering them as decision makers, influencers, and change agents in their communities.

“We are committed to investing resources and empowering young people.”

The deadline for applications for the grant scheme is January 25. Applicants will be told if they have been successful by the February 8.
