AN awarding time has been enjoyed by a Vale of Clwyd sporting club.

Denbigh Tennis Club held its annual club awards night earlier this month, with eight prizes being handed out.

Being held for the first time in a number of years, over 20 club members descended on the Hope & Anchor, Denbigh, for the event.

Categories covered included the men's player of the year, the most improved player of the year and the most dedicated person of the year.

Double winner Marc Shaw took the prizes for the club's best server and best volleyer of the year, thanks to some powerful strikes and dynamic volleying.

The club person of the year went to the secretary, Steffan Jones for his "outstanding contribution to the club over the past 12 months", with the club's most dedicated player being his father Russell Jones.

The closest category of all was voted for with three members tied in second place.

They were just one vote behind winner Cathryn Lloyd-Jones in the category for the club's most improved player of the year award.

Cathryn has made rapid progress over the past 12 months, and has played well in the club tournaments and matches.

The club's junior player of the year went to 12-year-old Andrew Thompson.

He came to the club in 2016 and has since been successful with partner Russell Jones in Division Three of the North Wales Men's Summer League.

The duo have won 14 of 16 their matches together in the division.

The ladies' player of the year award went to newcomer and Denbigh's mixed doubles champion Meinir Hughes, who narrowly beat club stalwarts Val Fletcher and Alison Godwin to the prize after a very successful 12 months at the club.

The long awaited and anticipated men's player of the year prize was presented at the end of the evening, with many speculating that first team player Marc Shaw would be in the run-in for the award.

It was head-to-head between Marc Shaw and Russell Jones throughout the voting process, with 1980 player of the year Russell pipping Marc to the award at the very end for his second award of the night.

September's club tournament champions were presented with their trophies at the end of the night, with Alex Carter and Meinir Hughes winning the mixed doubles championships, while Val Fletcher and Gareth Jones took the ladies and men's singles titles.
