MORE than one hundred people have joined a litter-picking campaign to clear Ruthin of rubbish.

The Tidy Town Team, set up by Gavin Harris, deputy mayor of Ruthin six months ago, took to Cunning Green and Cae Ddol play areas on Sunday, March 24 in its latest effort to improve the town's walkways and green spaces.

Areas already tackled by the volunteer group, which is funded and insured by Ruthin Town Council’s amenities committee, include Railway Walks, St Peter’s Square and Churchyard, Wynnstay Road and the War Memorial.

The group has also received support from Ruthin businesses such as Richard Williams Ltd, Workplace Worksafe, Ruthin Decor, manorhaus, Castle Bell News and Ruthin Garden Centre through discounts and in-kind contributions to equipment.

Cllr Harris, who takes part in every clean-up, said: “The team meet once a month to target a specific area that needs attention, which can include litter-picking, clearing paths, painting benches and general tidying of public areas.

“The meet days vary from weekdays to weekends and volunteers are not expected at every meet, so the group can suit different people and lifestyles.

“Even over the winter a selection of around 12 people have attended each meet, making for a productive and manageable team.”

The group’s work has been boosted by Ruthin Town Council's plan to plant trees along entrances to the network of green routes across Ruthin.

Cllr Harris said: “The council is supporting the cost of further tree planting in the town as part of Ruthin Future and Denbighshire Councils Safer routes scheme, with feature trees being planted to mark entrances to the network of green routes."

This will "improve the amenity and attractiveness of the town," Cllr Harris added.

The Tidy Town Team is inviting members of the Ruthin community to join its Keep Wales Tidy’s Spring Clean Cymru 2019.

It will also hold a Ruthin Tidy Town Day starting at Crispin Yard from 10am on Saturday, April 6.
