SPEED cameras have been installed on the notoriously dangerous 21 mile long Evo triangle route

The route which runs from Llyn Bran, to Cerrigydrudion, on to Pentrefoelas and back to Llyn Bryn has attracted many speeding motorists, including supercar owners. There have been fatalities on the road and numerous court cases for motoring offences.

One police officer said: “Sadly we have seen fatalities on this route. It is an area where families regularly visit and they are being put at risk by the unreasonable actions of some drivers, who used the road as a race track.

“Not only do they risk their own lives, but they also risk the lives of other road users.”

The Welsh Government announced last October that Denbighshire and Conwy Councils would be awarded £500,000 from the Road Safety Grant to fund average speed cameras in the area.

The news of the installation of the speed cameras has been welcomed by Darren Millar AM, he said: "I am delighted the cameras have finally been installed and the vast majority of motorists who are sensible will feel safer while driving.

"Residents and I have long been calling for additional safety measures along the EVO triangle, on which four people have been killed on since 2012.

"Dangerous driving has plagued residents who live in the area, and they will be glad to know dangerous drivers will be caught and disciplined. I trust that these cameras will stop irresponsible drivers putting their foot down and endangering their and other motorists lives.”

A spokesperson for Conwy County Borough Council said: “Dangerous driving and excessive speed have persisted on the route, and this scheme has been jointly led by Denbighshire County council and Conwy County Borough council.

Superintendent Jane Banham, head of specialist operations, North Wales Police said: “We are committed to keeping people safe on the roads, we want people to enjoy the freedom of the road but to do so safely and responsibly. All too often we and the other emergency services are called to serious and fatal road traffic collisions across the region.

Whilst the vast majority of motorists drive or ride appropriately, some choose to use the roads as a racetrack, committing serious breaches of road safety legislation thereby putting themselves and other road users at risk of death or life changing injury.
