PUPILS who rolled up their sleeves to grow healthy crops at school have reaped rewards at their village’s flower show.

Ysgol Llannefydd’s gardening club teaches pupils aged five to 11 how to grow fruit and vegetables, get rid of weeds and make a bug hotel. They have grown strawberries, lettuce, courgettes, carrots, tomatoes and a variety of herbs that can be eaten from picking.

The club was set up in February and took part the Llannefydd Flower Show for the first time. And following months of hard work, the pupils received a string of awards including first place for courgette and radish, second place for peas and third place for rhubarb.

The awards topped a successful inaugural year for the club after it received level one and two certificates in the Royal Horticultural Society’s School Gardening Awards, which aim to get children involved in gardening and engaged with environmental issues.

An Ysgol Llannefydd spokesperson said: “The pupils have put hard work into the school garden - from planting those first seeds to the weekly sessions of weeding and watering. Parents have also given their time to help build the garden as well as keeping everything watered and weeded over the summer holidays.

“The children were delighted to win a trophy and hopefully this will encourage their ongoing enthusiasm for gardening.”
