A TEENAGE sheepdog handler from Bala has scooped a coveted Countryfile 'One Man and His Dog' Trophy.

Erin McNaught, 16, appeared on the show, which aired on Sunday, representing Wales alongside Shepherd Kevin Evans.

The pair won the junior and senior team competition - pipping England, Scotland and Ireland to the title. England were represented by the first ever female winner of One Man and His Dog - Katy Cropper, who took the trophy in 1990.

The show saw senior shepherds teamed up with promising young talent.

Described on the show as a "confident handler", Erin guided border collie Sam during the trials and the pair scored a total of 73 points for their efforts.

Combining that with Kevin and his dogs Bec and Doug's total of 96 points saw the Welsh duo come out on top with 169 points - way ahead of runners-up Ireland on 148.

Speaking following her and Sam's performance, Erin said: "It was very hard to judge on the drive (one of the competitions). One slight move and you've missed it."

"I just love this sport so much and have so much passion for it."

Ahead of the competition, Erin had stated that the only thing she was worried about was "having bad sheep" on the day.

However, Sam performed well, achieving; Outrun (18/20), Lift (8/10), Fetch (15/20), Drive (14/30), Maltese cross (10/10) and Pen (8/10). Erin was already a star in the world of sheepdog trials beforehand, having won the International Young Handlers contest in 2019.
