A GATHERING to commemorate a flooded Welsh village was held over the weekend.

Capel Celyn, near Bala, was flooded in 1965 in order to create a reservoir providing water to parts of England, including Liverpool.

Welsh Independence campaigner Elfed Wyn Jones and Liz Saville Roberts MP were two of the speakers on Sunday as people from all over Wales visited the Celyn Lake Dam to remember and reflect on the incident.

A spokesperson for Hiraeth Films, the organiser of the event, said: "The activities which took place over the weekend remind us that the history of Capel Cleyn is just as important now as it was 50 years ago.

"The fact that people travelled from all over Wales on a cold Sunday afternoon just to pay their respects to the area made it an emotional event.

"Last year, we had just one person turn up to the event, this year we had a great number of people, so we are very excited to see what next year's gathering will bring."

The three member team at Hiraeth films have also been putting together a documentary in order to raise further awareness of the history of Capel Celyn and other parts of Wales.

They are attempting to raise funds to help them produce a top quality film that will teach future generations about Wales' past.

"n order to gain access to the necessary archive footage and music we will need to spend significant sums of money, something which at this time we don't have," the spokesperson added.

"We still have several interviews left to complete before the year is out too which requires not only time but fuel expenses etc.

"This was originally going to be a small 15 minute project however the sudden interest in the project, in no small part due to the increased support from independence groups has meant our ambitions have grown.

"The reception to the film in its current form has been unbelievable. We would like to thank everyone for their support so far and we really hope that we can soon create something that Wales as a whole can be proud of."

The final film will be released for all to watch online for free. To donate to Hiraeth Films' fundraising cause, visit: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/hiraethfilms
