Bronze award

A PRIMARY school has been awarded the Bronze Award for Cymraeg Campus.

Ysgol Y Parc in Denbigh signed up for the initiative.

The Cymraeg Campus Language Charter has been created by ERW Welsh in Education officers and is the first charter specifically created to develop Welsh in English medium schools.

The charter consists of three awards - bronze, silver and gold. Schools attempt to complete these awards over a three year period.

A spokesperson for the school said: "Ysgol y Parc decided to take part and aim for the bronze as soon as the initiative was in place. From then on, the staff and pupils have worked together to promote the Welsh ethos and language across the school.

"This involved the help of some pupils that were elected into the 'Criw Cymraeg', a committee of year two pupils who wanted to make a difference to the school.

"They have implemented Welsh playground games and even been detectives for the Welsh co-ordinator, Ffion Hughes, to check staff and pupils were using the language on a regular basis.

The efforts made by the whole school resulted in a fantastic assessment and follow up report, which suggested that the school pursue the silver award."
