A YOUTH music festival established in 1947 to overcome international divisions caused by the Second World War is set to digitalise its seven-decade archive.

The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has expanded its archive team in a bid to preserve its history of traditional music, dance and performance by artists from more than 50 countries. It has also featured world-leading classical artists such as Luciano Pavarotti and Jools Holland.

The Archiving the Past project received £19,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to gather footage, images and documents that will then be made accessible online.

Archivist Liz Parfitt is leading volunteers on the 12-month project to catalogue and digitalise existing historical records and documents. They are also handling information gathered as part of the festival’s ‘Memories’ campaign in which festivalgoers were encouraged to share their experiences over the decades.

A Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod spokesperson added: “The new digital archive system will provide a valuable resource for anyone who wishes to celebrate the festival’s vibrant past.”
