A VILLAGE hall used by schools and community clubs is set to undergo a £250,000 refurbishment as part of a national grassroots funding scheme.

Neuadd Y Plwyf in Llannefydd is among the chapels, venues and public spaces awarded the sum by the Welsh Government’s Community Facilities Programme. The £3.7million scheme provides £25,000 and £250,000 for organisations to improve popular community-run buildings for increased public use.

The charity-run hall in Llannefydd, built in 1966 on the Denbighshire-Conwy border, is used by nearby chapels, primary school PE classes, community concerts and bowls and young farmers clubs.

The grant will fund the renovation of the building, including a roof and heating system, solar panels, insulation, windows and doors, new kitchen facilities and a lift and disabled toilet.

Arwel Jones, chair of the Hall Committee, said: “Along with other grant monies, this will allow the renovation project to go ahead in the New Year safeguarding and improving an important community facility for the future.”

Gwyneth Griffiths, community councillor for Llannefydd, said: “The Hall was built after a huge local fundraising initiative and has since been run by a committee of volunteers from the community.”

The refurbishment is expected to begin in Spring 2020.

Other North Wales recipients of the scheme funding include Nant Conwy Rugby Club to buy new floodlighting and Y Dref Werdd, in Blaenau Ffestiniog to launch an advice and signposting service.

More than 150 projects have been funded since the programme launched in 2015 with the latest round raising the total sum to £28.2m.

The Welsh Government’s deputy minister and chief whip Jane Hutt said: “Our Community Facilities Programme is a fantastic opportunity which supports local projects to evolve and grow for their area and its needs.

“Offering grants likes these to community-led projects helps to improve regularly-accessed and much needed facilities. These include anything from community centres and religious venues to spaces for art and sports.”
