EVERYONE has a responsibility to do the right thing, the health minister said.

Health Minister Vaughan Gething said when following the rules, everyone needs to think about what they can do to keep everyone safe.

At the Welsh Government press conference, Mr Gething was asked about face masks and why there is not a regulated process to ensure those exempt are really exempt.

Mr Gething said it was the 'right approach' in allowing those exempt to print off their own exemption cards or purchase one as a 'regulated approach' would result in more pressures on the NHS.

He said the pandemic relies on 'people doing the right thing' and everyone has a responsibility. Mask wearing is one of those responsibilities and 'the great majority of people have done that'.

He said there is no specific proof, and it would be difficult to regulate any exemptions but instead, it is about people being honest with each other about why they don’t need to wear covering, and he said he thinks compliance is very high.

Mr Gething went on to say that people are committed to doing the right thing, and if anyone cannot wear a covering, there is normally somebody at the front door of a shop who can be spoken with.

When asked about face coverings and whether guidance needs to be changed from any face covering like a scarf, to a 3-ply mask, he said this is under constant review.

The health minister said Welsh Government is constantly reviewing the advice, and mask wearing is just one control measure in place.

He said the most successful measure has been reducing contact and when people go out, they regularly wear masks.

He said if there is a need to change the advice, they would be happy to do that based on the scientific evidence.
