CORWEN’S leisure centre will be officially opened under it’s new name in honour of a popular town councillor next week.

Much-loved town and county councillor Huw ‘Chick’ Jones died aged 62 in February 2020.

Mr Jones’ love for sport was well and truly ingrained into the community forever recently after a stand at the Corwen Football Club ground was named in his honour, as well as the clubhouse at the club’s Dee Park youth facilities.

Denbighshire Leisure Ltd also announced that the town’s leisure centre was to be re-named ‘Canolfan Hamdden Huw Jones Leisure Centre’ in his memory.

On Wednesday, May 19, at 2pm, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the leisure centre site to officially launch the re-branded venue.

Numbers will be restricted due to the current Covid-19 guidelines.

The leisure centre has recently received an extensive refurbishment, thanks to investment from Denbighshire County Council.

This has included a new pool hall, spectator area, and wetside changing, an overhaul of the upstairs fitness suite, and a brand new studio.

Denbighshire Leisure Ltd and Denbighshire County Council say they are ‘proud’ to name the site after Cllr Jones who had a strong belief in the importance of leisure and its effect on improving health and wellbeing.

Jamie Groves, Managing Director of Denbighshire Leisure said “Huw was a popular, kind and trusted man, who wanted the best for everyone in his community and his county. We feel this is a very fitting tribute for the many years Huw devoted to his local community and his County.”
