RUTHIN Ladies Hockey team began their new season with a comfortable 9-0 victory over Bangor City's second team.

Ruthin handed four senior debuts to Mali Thomas, Anna Roberts, Rebecca Wynne, and Eva Evans who all performed to a very high standard against a Bangor side which recently merged with Ardudwy Hockey Club.

The home team started the game on the front foot from the get-go, with attacking intent. The pressure on the Bangor goal finally told when an attack forced one of the Bangor City defenders to divert the ball into their own goal.

Following this, experienced player Eleri Jones arrived late to the game but didn’t disappoint, as within a couple of minutes of coming on, had the ball in the goal with a fine bit of dribbling and a very composed finish.

These goals gave Ruthin a boost in confidence, and this translated into their playing style with some great inter-linking play and saw them score a further two goals before the half time whistle with a brace from Llio Thomas.

The second half got underway with Bangor City coming out the blocks quickly and showing some good pressure which resulted in them getting some space in Ruthin’s half.

However, the experienced players and coaches of Ruthin galvanised the team and halfway through the second half Ruthin were able to gain back control.

The fifth goal for Ruthin came from a short corner and a brilliant straight strike from Eleri Jones saw her get her second goal of the game.

Ruthin carried on this pressure with hard work and great desire shown by the young debutants. This paid off with a fine strike by Llio Thomas who completed her hat-trick.

Ruthin really found their stride following this goal and some great play through the midfield found debutant Mali Thomas who finished brilliantly for her first senior goal.

Shortly after this, some great play again from Ruthin found Megan Hughes in some space and she calmly beat the Bangor keeper.

Ruthin saved the best goal until last, scored by Player of the Match Anna Roberts. Following some good attacking play by the Ruthin midfield, the ball found its way to the stick of Roberts who’s brilliant, lifted goal into the top right corner was the highlight of all nine.

Ruthin travel to Bangor next Saturday to play the youngsters of Bangor University.
