Denbighshire County Council is working to make Halloween as safe and enjoyable as possible for local people.

The Council’s Trading Standards section is reminding residents to be considerate at this time of year as well as staying safe in light of Covid-19.

Cllr Mark Young, Denbighshire’s Lead Member for Planning, Public Protection and Safer Communities, said: “October 31 is a date associated with parties and family fun, but for some it can be a night to forget.

“On Halloween elderly people can be left frightened and intimidated by youngsters calling at their home - particularly when the callers are in costume.

“We don't want to stop anyone enjoying themselves, but we are asking residents to bear in mind the apprehension elderly and vulnerable people may have about callers knocking on their door late at night on Halloween.

“We would ask youngsters to make Halloween as pleasant as possible for the households they call on by being polite and courteous.

“Younger children are often accompanied by their parents on Halloween night, but older children are often allowed to go trick or treating on their own.

“Parents should ensure their children are suitably advised as to possible ramifications involving elderly residents. A message they may wish to employ is to imagine they are visiting their own grandparents.

“We are also advising residents to bear in mind that Covid-19 is still circulating in our communities.

“We would encourage those trick or treating to use hand sanitizer regularly and for households to practice good hygiene, including hand washing and providing hand sanitizer.

“It is also important that anyone displaying Covid-19 symptoms should book a PCR test.”
