CORWEN Football Club could be set to return home next month after a disagreement forced them out of their long-term ground at the end of last year.

Back in September 2021, the club had to move out of the War Memorial Park ground it had been playing on for the last 40 years due to 'several areas of concern' being raised by the town council.

The issues outlined by Corwen Town Council - who are the charity trustee for the site - led to the football club being unable to use it to its full extent.

The club currently competes in the tier three Lock Stock Ardal North East League and Football Association of Wales (FAW) criteria for that division states that a club's home ground must be equipped with 'a dressing room for each team with a minimum of four showers, seating room for at least 18 people and exclusive use'.

But, in September 2021, access to the showers on site was restricted by the town council who were set to carry out work on site including 'essential work to the water system'.

As a result, Corwen FC moved 12 miles out of town to Bala Town FC's Maes Tegid ground to play out its fixtures whilst officials 'considered its future'.

However, it has now been confirmed that the club could well return home to Corwen as of February. This comes as a result of a 'positive' meeting held between the two parties in December 2021.

No official return date has been confirmed yet, but 'an agreement' is set to be drawn up and signed in the coming weeks.

A statement posted to the Corwen War Memorial Park Facebook page read: "A positive meeting was held between the new War Memorial Park Committee and Mr Michael Mcnamara and Mr Martin Lyons of Corwen Football Club last night.

"An open and lively discussion was had, and everyone agreed about the importance of looking to the future and not back to the past.

"The outcome of the meeting was that the club will start playing their home fixtures at the Rec when they restart in February, once an agreement between both parties has been drawn up and signed. Great news for the town!"

At the time of Corwen FC having to move out, Corwen Town Council insisted they still want the club, as well as the other sports clubs involved there, to keep playing home matches at War Memorial Park, but 'not until the issues are addressed'.

Even EFL Championship footballer Harry Wilson, who grew up in Corwen, had his say on the matter at the time, calling the situation 'sad' and adding that he 'regularly enjoyed going to watch the team play there throughout my life'.

Corwen FC plays in the Lock Stock Ardal Northeast Division (tier 3) and are currently 9th in the table.

Their home fixtures in February are against Carno (February 5), Llanfair United (Feb 19) and Four Crosses (Feb 26) - but it is as yet unclear as to which of these games, if any, will see them return to the War Memorial Park.
