SCORES of people in Ruthin turned out in force to support a major challenge.

Last week, a 500-mile charity cycle ride from Murrayfield in Edinburgh to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff took place ahead of the Wales v Scotland Doddie Weir Cup match in the Six Nations.

The intrepid group of cyclists stopped off at Ruthin Rugby Club on Friday morning, receiving a great deal of support from residents.

Among those taking part was a group of four riders from Ruthin Rugby Club, who joined rugby legends Shane Williams, Wales’ record try-scorer, England’s Mike Teague, Scotland’s Rob Wainwright and former Wales captain Colin Charvis, as well as cycling stars Sir Chris Hoy and Mark Beaumont on the mission to deliver the match ball for the 2.15pm kick-off on Saturday.

The two-day, 50-hour relay ride was for popular former Scotland second row giant Doddie Weir’s campaign to raise funds for research into the motor neurone disease which affects him and so many others across the UK.

The cycling cavalcade stopped at Ruthin on Friday morning before heading for Dolgellau with stop-offs at Ysgol Y Berwyn, Bala, and Ysgol O M Edwards, Llanwchllyn, on the way.

The Ruthin Rugby Club team of Dr Matt Davies, Steve Morgan, Rob Boyns and Wyn Jones raised in excess of £22,000 for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which aims to rid the world of MND.
