PLANS to set up a community shop in a Denbighshire village are gathering pace.

A meeting to discuss the potential return of a shop in Llandyrnog will be held in Llandyrnog Village Hall on Thursday, May 26 at 7pm.

Resident Emyr Morris has been the driving force behind the plans and he said: "Following the closure of two pub / restaurants, shop, butcher and the Arla Cheese factory in the village over the last few years the village has been left a sorry shadow of its former self.

"The final straw was when the Post Office and the old shop building were placed on the market, and with the potential of also losing this service I decided to set up a project to look at setting up the Llandyrnog Community Shop and post office project to set about purchasing the property and reopen the shop."

Mr Morris, who is now a member of Llandyrnog Community Council, added: "I want to include anybody and everybody.

"There's a great team of volunteers taking leaflets around to get as much publicity as we can.

"I came up with the idea after the shop went on the market in March."

After then going down with Covid, Mr Morris got the "machine whirring again".

"I put it on the community page on Facebook," he added.

"It had 200 positive comments.

"I thought obviously I'm going down the right road."

Leaflet drops have been conducted around the area, from Hendrerwydd to Aberwheeler.

Volunteers have also been coming forward to help out with the shop, as well as help with a website and HR work.

"This is something I felt was important," he added.

"Apart from the fact we're just on the edge of the AONB, they're talking about National Park status for Bryniau Clwyd.

"It will be not-for-profit and community owned."
