IT has certainly been a goal-den return for a popular North Wales sporting league!

After sitting out the previous three years, the latest episode of the long-running Llandyrnog and District Summer League has come to an end.

With large crowds and plenty of goals, it turned out to be a successful return for the league, which has been in existence since 1927.

Winning the league championship on this occasion were Cefn, with Henllan lifting the Evans and Bridson Memorial Shield to complete the season.

League chairman Dennis Williams said: "It has gone well considering what has happened, based on we had new people on the committee.

"Sian (Jones) our new secretary was instrumental in starting it back.

"All teams played in a good spirit.

"Thanks to supporters and teams, (it was a) good season."

Mr Williams also thanked the referees' secretary for organising all the match officials over the course of the summer.

The regular league season witnessed 132 games, with a bumper 643 goals being scored.

There were 11 ties in the end-of-season Shield competition, with 54 goals being netted, which meant the amount of goals for the season was a massive 697.

Only one goalless draw was witnessed during the course of the campaign, between Flintshire rivals Caerwys and Ysceifiog.

Clawddnewydd chairman Huw K Williams said: "It's been great to see everyone again.

"It's a great way for bringing communities back together after a couple of lean years.

"Diolch bawb!"

Cllr Huw Hilditch-Roberts is another Summer League supporter and he said: "Think it's fair to say it got the community together and given the youth a chance to bond with the community and bring the supporters in droves.

"The massive thing is that the Summer League has supported local pubs in difficult times."

The 2023 season will get underway next April.
