SINGERS from the Vale of Clwyd will be looking to inspire Wales' top athletes on Wednesday.

A young choir will be inspiring Team Wales athletes with a performance in Birmingham on the eve of the Commonwealth Games.

Côr Dyffryn Clwyd, a choir with members aged 14-25, won the honour to represent the Urdd and perform as Team Wales’ official choir after winning a competition at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Denbigh earlier this summer.

Thanks to a unique partnership between the Urdd and Team Wales, Côr Dyffryn Clwyd will perform on Wednesday afternoon at Team Wales House to help inspire the athletes as they prepare for the start of the main competitions.

The Urdd has been an official partner of Team Wales since 2019, and during last year’s digital Eisteddfod T it was announced that the Urdd’s mascot, Mistar Urdd, had been chosen as Team Wales’ official mascot for this year’s Commonwealth Games.

As well as a visit by Côr Dyffryn Clwyd, the Mistar Urdd selfie bench has also landed at Team Wales House.

The eye-catching selfie bench was first unveiled on the Wyddfa less than two weeks ago as part of the Urdd’s centenary celebrations.

Siân Lewis, the Urdd’s chief executive, said: “The opportunity to represent Wales in an international competition is rare and only comes around every four years.

"The Commonwealth Games is a unique opportunity for Welsh elite athletes to wear the red kit and represent our country on an international level.

“The Urdd and Team Wales’ relationship is going from strength to strength, and it’s great to work together to help inspire the next generation to enjoy sport, as well as to offer unique experiences for our members as Côr Dyffryn Clwyd are having here today.”

Cathy Williams, head of engagement for Team Wales, said: "This opportunity has been a long time in the planning, and we can’t wait for the athletes and the locals in Birmingham to hear Cor Dyffryn Clwyd perform.

"I was there in the Eisteddfod back in May when they won, and they were exceptional, everyone’s in for a treat this afternoon.

"We must thank the Urdd for all their support since becoming our charity partner, it’s imperative to continue inspiring the next generation and to promote our language across the Commonwealth."

The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games is on July 28, with the closing ceremony scheduled for August 8.

Tour de France star Geraint Thomas, triathlete Non Stanford and athlete Aled Sion Davies are among the big Team Wales names for the Games.
