AN independent Denbighshire school founded only six years will be going toe-to-toe with some of the most prestigious schools in the country at the annual public school Oscars.

Myddelton College, in Denbigh, is one of only two schools in Wales to be short-listed for the Independent School awards, organised by Independent School Parent magazine, which will be presented at a ceremony in Knightsbridge next Tuesday, October 11.

In a list of some of the oldest and most famous schools in the UK, Myddelton is in company with the likes of King Charles’ former school, Gordonstoun, Dulwich College, Roedean and Wales’ only other contender, Cardiff High School.

They have been nominated in the category for co-educational independent school of the year and are up against Ipswich School, which can trace its history back to 1399, Nottingham High School to 1513, King’s School Worcester 1541, the Royal Hospital School 1712 and Eastbourne School, a relative newcomer from 1867.

Headmaster Andrew Allman said: “It is an honour to be keeping such exalted company – these are some of the biggest and best names in private education in the world.

“It’s a testimony to the way we have been working to transform what it means to be educated in the 21st century.

“We adopt a holistic approach. We have so many different areas of school life and not many other schools offer learning through the outdoors and are a Microsoft Showcase School.

“Myddelton has been building steadily over its initial years and this year has flourished onto the educational platform with glowing success."
