A GALLANT First World War hero will be remembered at a Denbighshire film screening next month.

A film on the life of Frederick Birks VC MM will be screened at Denbigh's Theatr Twm o'r Nant on Armistace Day - November 11.

The film has been produced by Tony Griffiths, the great nephew of Frederick.

Frederick, from Buckley, received the Military Medal and posthumously the Victoria Cross for his bravery and gallantry in the First World War.

Born and brought up in Buckley, he attended St Matthew's School and Church.

He played football for the Buckley team and in the film, Evan Holden takes the part of Frederick as a young footballer.

In 1913, together with three pals, Frederick travelled to Australia.

When war broke out in 1914, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force.

His battalion was sent to Gallipoli where Fred was a stretcher bearer, coming under constant fire.

He won the Military Medal in November 1916.

Fred was killed at the Battle of Menin Road on September 21, 1917.

For his gallantry and bravery in this endeavour he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

Tony Griffiths said: "We will also show a tribute film to those involved in World War I and World War II.

"The films will be screened by Denbigh Film Club, starting at 7.30pm."

Advance tickets for the screenings are available from the Photo Shop on Bridge Street, Denbigh, priced at £5.

It is hoped that a donation from ticket sales will go to the British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
