THE issue of Ukrainian refugees leaving Denbighshire to live elsewhere in the UK has been raised by an MS

Gareth Davies, the MS for the Vale of Clwyd, has stated that the lack of good transport links and facilities in the county are some of the reasons connected to the development.

Last summer, Denbighshire County Council made a plea for people living in the county to get in touch with Welsh Government if they could offer a home for those resettling in the UK as a result of the atrocities in Ukraine.

Following this, Mr Davies praised everyone in the Vale of Clwyd for their generosity to Ukrainians.

Equally, the MS says he is glad that UK, Welsh and local governments have worked together to pay their part in the war effort.

However, Mr Davies said some Ukrainian refugees in Denbighshire have decided to leave the area for other parts of the UK due to a lack of good transport links and facilities across the area.

He said: "Refugees from Ukraine came to the Vale of Clwyd to escape Putin’s brutal war and communities across the constituency welcomed them with open arms, but sadly some refugees are having to leave to find better facilities.

"Like on many other issues, the Welsh Government chose to reply to my question on this matter by deflecting to the UK Government for what is happen in England.

"If the Welsh Government calls itself ‘Nation of Sanctuary’, then they should ensure that Ukrainian refugees do not need to leave Wales."

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “We are proud to be a Nation of Sanctuary and have welcomed more than 6,700 people from Ukraine to Wales.

"So far we have supported 1,500 people to move on from our initial accommodation into longer-term housing.

"All Homes for Ukraine visa holders have the right to live in any part of the UK and, as a super sponsor, we have been privileged to support 500 people who have chosen to settle outside Wales.

“We have also extended the welcome ticket for people from Ukraine, which provides free travel on public transport, until the end of June this year.

"In addition, we recently announced how we will continue to support people fleeing the war in Ukraine and support those already in Wales to move into longer-term accommodation with an additional £40m investment over the next financial year which underlines our ongoing commitment as a Nation of Sanctuary.”
