A POLICE investigation is underway after a man died in a crash in Wrexham early this morning (July 17).

At 2:21am, North Wales Police received a report of a road traffic collision involving a white coloured Vauxhall Corsa which had collided with the front window of Gerrads Bakery on Ruthin Road.

The emergency services attended and both the male driver and female passenger were taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital by ambulance.

Police have confirmed that the male driver died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

They added that the female passenger has since been transferred to hospital in Stoke with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Sergeant Steve Richards of the Roads Policing Unit said: “Sadly this is now being investigated as a fatal road traffic collision and our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time.

“Significant damage was caused to the shop front and nearby property and the road was closed for a long time to allow colleagues from the Forensic Collision Investigation Team and Wrexham Council’s structural engineers to make an initial assessment.

"I’d like to thank the local community and motorists for their patience and understanding.

“Despite this collision happening during the early hours, we are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or anybody who may have dash cam or CCTV footage to contact us.”

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is urged to contact officers at the Roads Policing Unit via the live webchat or by calling 101, quoting reference number 23000642746.
